- Interview with Jacob Moore, founder of NoStigmas
About a month ago, I had the chance to hop on a Google Hangout with the founder of NoStigmas, Jacob Moore. I had the chance to ask him some questions about NoStigmas, how he prioritizes his mental health while working in the Acting/Voiceover fields while running a non-profit (the guy has a LOT going on!) NoStigmas is our brand partner this quarter. I'll be donating a portion of every product sale to them, as well as running the NOT5k on August 19th. Not signed up yet? Click here to register ***please note: while the below is not an exact transcript, I took a ton of notes while we were speaking, and did my best to use Jake’s words*** ***Also of note, Jake and I have known each other for about 12-15 years so I did cut out some of the "catching up" stuff*** Amber: “Hi friend! How are you? It’s so good to see you! So tell me a little bit about what you want my clients and the people who will be donating to know about No Stigmas?” Jake: “It’s good to see you too! I’m good! Well, we’re really proud that we have just about 65,000 organic users (of the NoStigmas community site www.nostigmas.org) now. We are at a point where we now have a blueprint with the hub of the main office personel, so that events and local communities can have their events look however they want it to look. Every community is different, so each event can be too” A: “So there’s you, and Elizabeth, how many other people are working full time for NoStigmas right now?” J: “We have 3 people on the payroll, but the majority of everything is handled by our volunteers. Those of us on payroll are here helping to facilitate and coordinate events all over the world, like the walk you’re doing!” A: “That’s awesome! Self Care is such a buzz-word right now, How important do you believe it is to mental health?Tell me a little bit about how you prioritize your mental well-being.” J: “It’s the first thing every. single. day! I wake up at 5am to give myself time to care for myself. I do about 20 minutes of meditation, 20 minutes of writing and 20 minutes of exercise...sometimes a little more, depends on if I do tae kwon do or not, that’s an hour and a half. No phone, no tv, no computer, and it sets me up for the rest of my day. It’s one hour out of 24” A: “Social media has lent itself to a society that always wants to look perfect...especially younger people. You’ve been really open about your struggles with mental health in the past, and I want to thank you for that,( ***insert Amber crying here***)because it encouraged ME to be more open about my struggle with anxiety and ocd. What compelled you, in this current appearance of perfection society, to be to open and show your humanity in such a real and raw way?” J: ”I spent so much of my life pretending to be an image of what I saw as perfection, but inside I was dying. I wasn’t connecting - I call it time travelling - you’re in a place but your head is somewhere else. I wasn’t happy and I felt like life was passing me by. I was on a flight to argentina and I met someone who became a mentor to me, and I realized I could have both. The moment I opened up and became vulnerable, I started having real relationships, the thing I had been searching for all those years. And the thing is, once you experience those real connections with people, nothing else is as good or acceptable, and I realized I could have a bigger impact on someone else.” A: “What has been your biggest challenge in running NoStigmas?” J: “Trying to maintain stability and consistency. It’s easy for me to coast, so I had to learn to create systems. And it took me about 5 years to learn that I can’t do it all myself, I don’t always know whats best, and when I hand it over to someone else, I’m not the pinch point anymore. I’m not the one getting in the way of growth.” A: **I’ll be honest now, I don’t remember what question I asked to get this response, but I just loved it….*** J: “There is power and strength in vulnerability. I get up onstage and sometimes I’m talking to hundreds, thousands of people, and it's like, I’ve crafted this message in a way, being vulnerable, to get up there and just go “I dare you to judge me!” A: “Thank you so much for taking time to chat with me, I appreciate you” J: “well, thank you!” Amber’s follow up note: I’m so proud of my friend. He has been a huge influence on my ability to speak openly about my own struggles with anxiety and OCD. He was the first person I saw being so open and transparent about their personal life, while crushing it their professional life. Thank you so much Jake for being a beacon of light in a sometimes lonely feeling world. Jacob’s Bio Taken from NoStigmas.org (you can also find him on IMDB ;) Jacob Moore is a wellness coach, mental health speaker and the founder of NoStigmas, a social movement for mental health equality. Having lost his father to suicide at age 6, Jacob grew up plagued by questions and anxiety. In high school Jacob developed panic disorder and eventually clinical depression. Throughout his teens and 20′s he struggled to find a "cure" with the aid of several medical professionals and 20 various combinations of pharmaceutical drugs. Ultimately, he discovered a whole-person approach to mental wellness, which included: nutrition, fitness, professional and peer support. Wanting to give back, Jacob created a community called NoStigmas where people could share their story and learn about mental health without feeling alone or ashamed. The community grew and in 2011, NoStigmas became recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity. #quarterlypartner #amberbuddatelier #amberbuddskincare #mentalhealth
- Skincare Basics Part 5: SPF
Sunscreen is the ULTIMATE in anti-aging. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV exposure from the sun or indoor tanning beds accounts for nearly 90% of all signs of aging in the skin - that's dullness, dark spots, fine lines, wrinkles, etc. AND people who use spf 15 or higher daily show 24% less signs of aging The American Academy of Dermatology states that 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime, and 9,500 are diagnosed with skin cancer every DAY. I'm not going to beat a dead horse here. I think it's safe to say at this point we ALL know the importance of sunscreen. However, I will say, the statistics don't lie, and sometimes we need a good reminder of why we take that extra step every day. Truth #1 Your makeup likely won't cut it. It is fairly common now for foundations to have spf in them. That's great. Think of that as an insurance policy for your spf. But you'll need to apply a separate spf for best results. Most people don't wear so much foundation that it actually acts as sun protection. * So here's the proper way to layer: Cleanser Toner Serum Eye Cream Moisturizer if you need one for A.M. Spf Makeup Truth #2 You need to wear sunscreen every day. Even on shady days, when you're inside, and in the winter. NOT just when it's warm out or you're on the beach. UVA (the aging rays) aren't any different when its shady, cloudy or cold. And windows don't block the part of the spectrum of light that ages us. So a window won't protect your skin from aging. Truth #3 You need to reapply every 2 hours if you're outside, and every 80 minutes if you've been in water. Most people forget to reapply, and they end up burned. Don't be that gal. Set an alarm on your phone or smartwatch and reapply, mmmkay? Love you. Look, I know sunscreen won't INSTANTLY make your skin better...but give it a few years. When you're showing significantly less damage to your skin than others your age, you'll be grateful wore it every day. And if you're still quite young, you'll REALLY thank me in 20 years….prevention is key. #noneedlesorsurgery One last tip: Wear UV blocking sunglasses. Your eyes and the skin around them (the fastest to age!) will thank you! *you need roughly a teaspoon of spf for your face, neck and ears, plus one ounce for your body - think the size of an average shot glass #spf #sunprotection #amberbuddatelier #skincare #skincare #sexyskincare

- Skincare Basics Part 4: Toner, Girl, You need a toner.
Toner. The hero of our story. I've had countless people ask me over the years "why do I need toner?" Or "Oh I used to use seabreeze....I can still smell it” * Or "Is it REALLY necessary?" The short answer is YES. It is. So let’s take a trip to my shower. No nothing untoward is happening...I just want you to have a visual. I have a glass walled shower. When I take a shower, and don't spray and wipe down the glass, I get water spots on the glass walls. Those water spots are the mineral buildup from the water. When we wash our face, a few things happen 1. our cleanser puts the pH of our skin out of its prime range - purposefully, to help cleanse away the dirt and bacteria 2. because we rinse with water, the minerals build up on the skin creating a film similar to those water spots on the glass A Toner counters those two things: it puts your skin back into prime pH AND it removes those water spots just like a windex wash would on that glass shower door. (please don't use windex on your skin. It was funny in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" - it's not funny in real life) WHY is is important for you to have your skin in optimal pH and remove the mineral buildup? It helps prevent irritation, dryness, and perhaps most importantly, it helps all the other products you put on after it work better. *Seabreeze is an astringent, NOT a toner, there IS a difference! **Bonus Tip**Toners can be used all over the body to prevent that winter dry itch on the skin You can spray it all over and wipe down with a towel #skincare #beautyblog #amberbuddskincare #esthetician #burnsvillemn #skincare

- Skin Care Basics Part 3: Exfoliate Properly
So why do we exfoliate? And how much? Think of the skin you can see on your face as the shingles on a roof of a house. They’re in place to slough off water and protect. However, when those “shingles” stack up over time (because they're almost TOO good at protecting) nothing else can penetrate them. We WANT our serums and moisturizers to penetrate through the tiny tiny gaps in the the "shingles" so we have to exfoliate off the stuff that's just building up and hanging on. What I DO recommend: Seeing an esthetician for professional level exfoliation every 4-6 weeks. Using a gentle (VERY GENTLE) powder scrub with your cleanser every few days. (Amber Budd Skincare "Exfoliate // Polish" was made specifically for this purpose.) What I DO NOT recommend: a coarse scrub (ahem! rhymes with quaint lies) that creates micro-tears in the surface of the skin, potentially causing more harm than good by spreading bacteria around and causing unnecessary irritation a washcloth - not strong enough - UNLESS your skin is super sensitive. And by sensitive I mean your skin turns red or blotchy with the smallest touch to the skin - THEN I would say a washcloth is a good option for you. Maybe. Let's talk before you do that. :) #skincare #beautyblog #amberbuddpeterson #Amberbudd #amberbuddskincare #amberbuddatelier #esthetician #tutorial

- Skin Care Basics Part 2: High Quality h2o
We hear it all the time, right? Drink more water. It's good for you. It's good for your skin. But no one ever tells us WHY. The average adult body is made up of 55-65% water, and 2/3 of that is contained within our cells. As we get dehydrated, the water is depleted from the cells, making us look tired, dry, itchy, sometimes increasing irritation in the skin, and increasing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. The skin is our largest organ, but our body recognizes that the internal organs need the water first, so if you're even slightly dehydrated, your internal organs are going to get the water first, and your skin will get it last. Our bodies are always seeking the proper equilibrium. If your skin is dehydrated, it can start to overproduce oil to "help" balance the skin as well. The average woman needs 2.7 liters of water per day. The average man needs 3.7 liters. (Mayoclinic.org) If you're now shaking your head at me and thinking "giiiiirl you're crazy, I currently drink 1-2 bottles of water a day...HOW am I ever going to drink that much water?" I've got you. First off, note that any fruit or vegetable you eat has water in it, and that counts towards your daily intake. I personally aim for half my body weight in ounces of water, and rely on fruits and veggies to make up the rest. Tips to get enough water: 1. keep a water bottle with you at all times. When it's empty, fill it up. 2. If you don't like plain water, try infusing yours with some cucumber slices, strawberries and mint, or another fruit combination. (LOVE pinterest for this. Just look up fruit infused water) 3. How do I keep track of my water consumption daily? I keep a strip of masking tape on my water bottle every day. I mark down how many times I fill my bottle. 4. Yes, this seems like a lot of water to some of you. I get it. It doesn't mean you need to start drinking that amount overnight. Start with one more cup a day per week. If you only drink 2 cups a day right now, I challenge you to drink 3 cups a day this week. Then next week, aim for 4 cups per day, etc until you reach the amount your body needs. Happy Chugging! #water #skincare #beautyblog #amberbuddpeterson #Amberbudd #wellness #amberbuddatelier #skincare
- Skin care basics Part 1: How to Wash Your Face
I know what you're thinking...I KNOW how to wash my face, Amber. I add water to my cleanser, wipe it around a bit, and rinse. Well, that's better than nothing, but it's not the BEST you could do. And I know, we're starting super basic here...but the basics are where great skin is made. To truly remove your makeup, the pollution and grime from the day, and any oil or bacteria on the skin, you need to wash your face for about 90 seconds. **CUE SCREECHING RECORD PLAYER** What? 90 Seconds?! Yep, you read that right. Here's the scoop: Add the amount of cleanser you need* to your fingertips Add a bit of water to give it some slip. Massage around your face in upward circles for 90 seconds. ** Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water*** Pat dry, do not scrub. **** Bonus tips: *if its a gel, it's about the size of a large pea, if its a cream, you'll need about a dime. **If you cleanser starts to dry out or feels like its soaking into your skin add a bit more water. ***NO HOT WATER on your face. Hot water strips the skin of its natural protective barriers. ****Do not use the same towel to dry your face as you use for yours and everyone else's hands in your home. Designate a facial towel, and don't use them for more than a few days between washes. #skincare #beautyblog #amberbuddpeterson #esthetician #amberbuddatelier
